Common Issues
Cervicogenic Headache
More people complain about headaches than any other medical ailments. It is estimated that more than 90% of people have suffered from headaches in their life. There are many different types and causes of headaches for example, people living in metropolitan areas experience severe pressure often believing that headaches occur due to their stressful lives.
The misalignment and deterioration of cervical spine can also cause cervicogenic headache. The cervical spine lies between the skull and the trunk and serves as a supportive role in bio-mechanics. Usually people at work who strain their necks for a long period of time or misuse their bed pillow or need to maintain the same posture for a prolonged period of time, would develop changes in the normal curvature of their cervical spine. This causes misalignment and deterioration of the cervical spine, affecting the first, second and third nerve resulting in neck and headache.
Symptoms
Patients tend to be mostly female. Early stage symptoms occur with pain in the back of the ears and neck as well as experiencing stiff shoulders. The pain spreads to the forehead between the eyebrows and the two sides of the skull. Since the area of pain can be extensive, often non-prescription pain relievers are taken but its effects wear off after a short time.
Treatments
Cervicogenic headache can be disabling however its prevention methods are quite simple such as maintaining a good posture while sitting, sleeping or working. If you usually work in front of the computer, you should lift your head and relax for a while after a period of time to let your neck muscles rest. In terms of treatment, electrotherapy and hot pad can effectively relieve pain with the most effective treatment method being spinal manipulation, where alignment of the cervical spine is set to the correct position.
